Different Ways to Use Your Residential Reflections Collection

Hey! We see you over there – you’re thinking about remodeling your kitchen or bathroom aren’t you? Everyone in your social media feed seems to be telling you to just go ahead and do it. Our design professionals create ideas especially for you. We’ve got the answers to help you decide if these 3 trending DIY projects are worth it:

1) Painting your kitchen cabinets – it depends.

This could be a great option if you want to freshen up your kitchen in the short term, but plan on replacing the cabinets in a few years. If done right and depending on usage, you should get 3 to 4 years of use before you really start to see noticeable wear. If you’re doing this yourself, do your research and be prepared – this is not a quick and easy project (or one for the faint of heart). Working with a professional painter may cost a bit more, but it may be worth it. Believe us when we say, fixing a botched cabinet paint job is time consuming and expensive.

In what situation would this be the best option? You bought an older home with dark cabinets. You plan to replace the whole kitchen, but need a quick-fix to help you love your new home while you save for the full remodel. Working with a professional painter, you only need to pay a couple thousand to have your cabinets painted – and it will give you the freedom to pick a fun color you wouldn’t have chosen for the long-term.

2) Painting your granite countertops – we would not recommend.

When we started seeing this trend popping up on social media, it made everyone on our team cringe. It is almost impossible to get paint to stick to a surface like granite, marble or laminate for any length of time – especially on high-traffic surfaces like a kitchen countertop. We’ll give it to some of those content creators! Their ability to paint over the granite to create amazing quartz- or marble-esque patterns is incredible, but that isn’t enough to help us overlook the inevitable scratching, denting and shabby look after a very short time.

3) Wallpaper in a bathroom – we would avoid this in most cases.

Wallpaper is definitely trending and we are here for it in many other places! It is a great way to bring style and drama to a space. Unfortunately, when installed in a bathroom it peels pretty quickly. Wallpaper and steamy showers just don’t make for a long lasting partnership.

Where should you do this? A powder room is a great place to have fun with design, and since there’s no shower, go for the bold with your wallpaper choices. It is a small space that loves big design!

What’s a sure design bet? Using a Residential Reflections Design Collection to guide your remodel project. Pick the collection that you love best, make your purchase, and download an easy-to-use shopping list that covers all the design selections from countertops to grout. Hand it off as-is to your contractor or use it to anchor your overall design while making your custom selections that make it truly your own. Good luck!
